His presence and accessibility resonated with me immediately, which allowed me to easily understand the meaning and value of a meditative life. My very first visit to the Garrison Institute was seven years ago, when I entered a room of meditators and was greeted by Tsoknyi Rinpoche. What’s the most powerful personal experience you’ve had at the Garrison Institute? Of course, this is all enhanced by the excellent food that nourishes the body and soul. They have drawn me to the well of their knowledge and their talks have continued to resonate with me. In addition to the physical beauty, I am sincerely grateful to the amazing group of teachers that I have heard speak at the Institute. The place and space continues to draw me in to its beauty in every season. I love taking hikes along the majestic Hudson River. How does the Institute foster that type of awareness?įrom my first visit to the grounds and environment, it has allowed me to experience wisdom in a sensory and personal way. This internal spirit brings me ever closer to the truths that affect the greater and common good. The way that it always brings my attention to the contemplative aspects of daily life, which then informs my inner consciousness in ways that lead to a more expansive awareness. What’s your favorite thing about the Garrison Institute? We caught up with her recently to discuss what the Garrison Institute means to her. These different strands of her journey have, in various ways, led her to the Garrison Institute, where she has been participating in programs for over seven years. In addition to these pursuits, Joy has a professional background in psychology, education and counseling. Joy Baum is a photographer, weaver and meditation teacher. ![]() Review: Kalita Records are proud and honoured to announce the first ever and official reissue of Kallaloo's sought-after 1982 disco single 'Star Child', accompanied by interview-based liner notes. It is unknown if dutch sound engineer Frans Rolland, who oversaw the recordings, knew he was helping to make history: during these sessions, Joana Do Rosario, whose majestic vocals were crucial to the sound of Voz Di Sanicolau, became the first Cabo Verdean woman ever to appear on a long playing record. Forty-four years later the album sounds as fresh as it did the day it was recorded. It should have been the beginning of something extraordinary but the pressures of making ends meet forced the musicians back to their day jobs, and Voz Di Sanicolau vanished as quickly as they had appeared, leaving their lone album, Fundo de Mare Palinha, as sole proof of their existence. The resulting album is both deeply felt and fiercely executed, and in its grooves one hears the sound of some of the finest Cabo Verdean musicians of their era locked in complete unity of purpose. ![]() Treble-soaked electric guitar lines snake back and forth through percussion-and-cavaquinho driven rhythms rooted in the sound of the islands established by the previous generation of Cabo Verdean emigres subtle keyboards wash through the background, and the vocals, traded between Joana Do Rosario and To-Ze, alternately push the music forward and soar above it. The album took only a few days to record, which may explain the unexpected urgency that fires each track. Review: In 1976, seven Cabo Verdean musicians going by the name Voz Di Sanicolau gathered in a small recording studio in Rotterdam where they laid down an album of fearsome coladeira songs inspired by the music of their home island of Sao Nicolau. Despite the originality of his percussive sound and the influence it has had on musicians, it had little impact at the time. Ĭommunications scholar Zizi Papacharissi explains the utility of being ideologically vague, and using terms and slogans that can mean anything the supporter wants them to mean. Kimmel notes that "Trump is an interesting character because he channels all that sense of what I called 'aggrieved entitlement,'" a term Kimmel defines as "that sense that those benefits to which you believed yourself entitled have been snatched away from you by unseen forces larger and more powerful. And the emotion is righteous indignation that the government is screwing 'us'". Writing for the Routledge Handbook of Global Populism (2019), Olivier Jutel claims, "What Donald Trump reveals is that the various iterations of right-wing American populism have less to do with a programmatic social conservatism or libertarian economics than with enjoyment." Referring to the populism of Trump, sociologist Michael Kimmel states that it "is not a theory an ideology, it's an emotion. And people can try and draw lines between the dots of his decisions. Former National Security Advisor and close Trump advisor John Bolton states this is true of Trump, disputing that Trumpism even exists in any meaningful philosophical sense, adding that "he man does not have a philosophy. As a political method, populism is not driven by any particular ideology. ![]() These inclinations are refracted into such policy preferences as immigration restrictionism, trade protectionism, isolationism, and opposition to entitlement reform. For many scholars, it denotes a populist political method that suggests nationalistic answers to political, economic, and social problems. Some historians, including many of those using a new fascism classification, write of the hazards of direct comparisons with European fascist regimes of the 1930s, stating that while there are parallels, there are also important dissimilarities. ![]() Others have more mildly identified it as a specific lite version of fascism in the United States. Some commentators have rejected the populist designation for Trumpism and view it instead as part of a trend towards a new form of fascism or neo-fascism, with some referring to it as explicitly fascist and others as authoritarian and illiberal. Some Republicans became members of the Never Trump movement, with several leaving the party in protest of Trump's ascendancy. Though not strictly limited to any one party, Trump supporters became a significant faction of the Republican Party in the United States, with the remainder often characterized as "establishment" in contrast. The precise composition of Trumpism is contentious and is sufficiently complex to overwhelm any single framework of analysis it has been called an American political variant of the far-right, and the national-populist and neo-nationalist sentiment seen in multiple nations worldwide from the late 2010s to the early 2020s. ![]() Trumpists and Trumpian are terms used to refer to those exhibiting characteristics of Trumpism, whereas political supporters of Trump are known as Trumpers. ![]() Trumpism is a term for the political ideologies, social emotions, style of governance, political movement, and set of mechanisms for acquiring and keeping control of power associated with Donald Trump and his political base. ![]() Death of a Thousand Cuts: If you're not careful, your combat teams will suffer this during periods of heavy alien activity - during particularly hectic periods there can be five or six missions every day, and with no time for your troops to rest and recuperate between missions, all the little wounds add up surprisingly quickly.Cut and Paste Environments: Most of the battle maps tend to rely on pre-rendered sections of terrain being put together in different combinations, just like the original X-COM games. The first battle the soldiers didn't even know what they were fighting before they got wiped out. Curb-Stomp Battle: In story the first few attempts to battle the aliens resulted in this. One particular piece of equipment, however, is extremely advanced despite being nearly sixty years old by the time PHALANX gets its hands on it - see the entry for Super Prototype below. However all the old equipment is replaced with the latest in 2084 technology. All of the base designs, battle tactics, strategy, and organization are copied right out of the old PHALANX manuals and documents. Break Out the Museum Piece: Played with.In fact, it isn't significantly more powerful than the standard assault rifle, and actually fires very small rounds (although it has exceptional armor penetration). ![]() BFG: Subverted with the Bolter Rifle, which is huge and bulky because it has to be in order to work properly, not because it is ludicrously powerful. As in, one where your soldiers can shoot them with ease on your turn. It gets taken up to eleven when they first try to shoot you through a wall, and only after that walk a few steps into a better firing position. They also spend a lot of time trying to shoot you through solid objects like walls and their own crashed ships. Aliens are still not smart enough to storm your base properly (they will just wander around at the entrance instead of going in for the kill).None of the soldiers are armed and they just run around. Most jarring during the mission where you need to protect a military convoy. They do try to make them smarter recently though. They don't try to take cover or run from aliens that are attacking them, even get in your way during the crossfire. Civilians still oddly behave like those in X-Com.The monomolecular blade doesn't do quite as much damage, but attacks faster, weighs less, and is small enough to be carried in a holster, thus making it a viable backup weapon that effectively obsoletes the standard combat knife. Yes, the invaders are carrying tools to cut you apart and inspect you on the hoof. The Kerrblade does slightly more damage, but as it's not a purpose-built weapon * It's not even a weapon per se according to the in-game dialogue, it's a vivisection tool. Both go through flesh like it's butter and Kevlar like it's paper, and generally One-Hit Kill unarmored (or even armored) targets. Absurdly Sharp Blade: The alien Kerrblade is a dissection tool, while the human-made monomolecular blades are merely terrifyingly sharp and made a little like katana.Ace Pilot: Your pilots will eventually become these if you manage them well, although pilot stats have not been implemented so they are equally effective no matter how many kills they've racked up.The current release version as of this writing is 2.5, released in late June 2014. UFO: Alien Invasion is a Quake II engine-based open source freeware strategy game that is effectively a direct remake of X-COM: UFO Defense, though it adds several new mechanics, changes up many of the old ones, and adds a completely new (and really rather good) story.
