Of course, our goal is to earn a fortune and develop this modest fleet, which we can do in two ways.įirst of all, we have to look around the surrounding cities, checking what goods are produced by their local communities, and which they are extremely lacking and are ready to pay a lot of money for them. We start the game with usually only one or two vessels, which will be the basis of our existence for the first few weeks spent in the virtual sea. Each of them has its own unique advantages and disadvantages, thanks to which we get as many as four different styles of gameplay – we can have pirate relief, trade without a license, or repair almost sunken ships. In addition to the Spaniards in the Caribbean waters, we can find English, French and Dutch.īefore we start our way to sea domination, we have to choose the character we identify with the most – an adventurer, merchant, corsair or pirate. We must start our career in Gaming Minds Studios as a trader of Spanish origin, which limits the room for maneuver a bit for those who would like to go through a campaign they like more at the very beginning – and of course we have four to choose from. Here, as in real life, the most important thing is money, which, as we know well, has ruled and still rules the world since the dawn of time. If you expect Port Royale 4 to be the next Sid Meier’s Pirates !, or another simulator of being a sailor, I will dispel your doubts immediately – the production reviewed today is a real, purebred and devilishly ruthless business game. Port Royale has entered the pages of the game’s history as a series that seriously treats the subject of sea trade in the times of great colonizers, thanks to which it is still the only proposition for those who want to get to know the realities of the Caribbean in the 17th century. Is Port Royale 4, then, one of those games that prove this thesis? Unfortunately, the answer to this question is a bit complicated. The golden times of strategic economic games are long gone, although there are still titles on the market that show us that you cannot write off this genre. After all this time, is trading at sea and fighting pirates still attractive? You will find out in our review! The Port Royale brand returns to the market after more than 8 years of absence – the announcement of Port Royale 4 was one of the surprises of the first Opening Night Live.
